			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Think of <strong>&#8220;Rainmaker Marketing&#8221;</strong> system as a three-legged stool.  If one leg of your stool is missing or less than the others, you&#8217;ll probably fall onto your <em>tushkit</em>.</p>
<p>Creating your <strong>reputation </strong>as a knowledgeable professional is one leg of your system.  Providing services of a type or <strong>quality </strong>that is superior to anything your competitors can provide is the second leg of your system.  Having a network of quality <strong>referral </strong>partners who are willing to send you leads is the third leg, and the hardest to get.</p>
<p>Referrals are so hard to get, that entire careers have been made on teaching practitioners how to use one method or another for getting &#8220;more&#8221; referrals.  I got one in the mail today where some referral &#8220;expert&#8221; was touting how two gal&#8217;s were making millions with a promo thing sending plastic beach ball toys through the mail.  No box, just a ball with stamps, an address, and a message stuck to it.  <em><strong>Now that may be a cute promotion, but how in the Sam Hill is that building a reputation that will get me referrals?</strong></em></p>
<p>What does work is getting to know the movers and shakers in your community, the leaders and activists.  Not just the business guys.  You know, the bankers, the lawyers, the chiropractors.  (The chiropractors?  Okay, that&#8217;s a bit much, but you get the idea.) These folks are hit on by every competitor you have in town, and <strong>your chances of getting a referral from one of them are nil</strong>.  Zip, squat, nada.  You walk in off the street and they&#8217;ll be polite, they&#8217;ll shake your hand, they&#8217;ll talk to you.  But, when it comes time to send a referral out, they&#8217;re going to send it to the folks they already know, like and trust.</p>
<p>What I want you to do is ask yourself, how can you establish a close relationship with the leaders in your community that will result in you being the one to get that referral?  Your answer, you get them to know you, like you, and trust you!</p>

<p>Oh, <strong>it works on a local basis</strong>, I used it successfully in the late 80&#8217;s to build a local office that grew so large I sold it and ran out of town because it generated more business than I could handle.  Seriously, I grew <strong>too big, too fast</strong>, using the same CRM technique that American Express used.  I gave 10% to the non-profit arm of a local credit union as well as a 10% or 20% discount on tax preparation fees to their members and they promoted me in their monthly share statement during tax season.</p>
<p>But, <strong>those days are largely gone. </strong> These days, a local practitioner is going to have a hard time working up a deal like that.</p>
<p>Which is why, when I happened to see a local entrepreneur being interviewed on Bloomberg TV show, &#8220;Venture,&#8221; I perked up when I realized that I could covert what he was doing to a Cause Related Marketing System! <p>Last month you should have downloaded your first speakers kit and lecture notes, your first brochure template and master, a PowerPoint presentation, and 200 to 250 names of clubs and organizations in your market area to start building your direct mail program soliciting speaking engagements.</p>
<p>Even if one of the groups or organizations hasn&#8217;t responded yet, don&#8217;t worry.  Almost every one of them will have filed your letter for future reference, keeping you in their file of resources to contact when they have a need for a speaker at one of their monthly meetings or other events.<span id="more-821"></span></p>
<p>This month you should schedule your mailers so that everyone who got a letter last month, gets one this month letting your prospects know about the second subject in your inventory of topics. Schedule your mailings so they are sent almost exactly four weeks after last months mailer, where you talked about Speech 1001, Profit Planning and Projecting.</p>
<p>Then, as you download new names and addresses this month, you send them the same letter and brochure you sent to your first months list.</p>
<p>What you&#8217;re going to do with this pattern is set up a cycle so that your prospects will receive a mailer each month, matching the month they are in your cycle.  When you download a name, they get a package talking about speech #1001, the next month, they get a mailer about speech 1002, in their third month, speech 1003, and continue in that cycle.</p>
