The term “Rainmaker” was first applied to attorneys in large, well connected firms who were responsible for bringing in more new business than they could handle on their own. In order to maximize the efficiency of the firm, junior partners were assigned to handle this overload of work, and they began to use the term Rainmeaker to describe the person whose work was “raining” down on them.
Why were these professionals able to succeed, and how did the term spread beyond the legal profession?
Many of these top professionals were hired because of the “name recognition” they brought to the firm as a perceived expert, or as someone who was perceived of as having “connections.” They were hired on the basis of their ability to position themselves as an expert, and as a skilled and well connected netwroker.
The techniques these “Rainmakers” used varied from developing networking skills in the political arena, becoming recognized as an expert through publicity related to their writing and publishing activities, or their activities as an educator and trainer.
They supported their image by providing only top of the line services, and never, never, allowing themselves to be associated with low prices!
